Two milestones, one narrow ridge of sand
Curiosity reached 5,000 Martian days after climbing one vertical kilometer from its start
The numbers make the mission sound enormous. The work happening beside them was precise enough to fit inside a wheel-made trench.

At Curiosity’s 5,000-sol milestone, the most immediate object in front of the rover was a long, narrow sand ridge named Chocolatal. One wheel had crossed the ridge and backed away, leaving a shallow trench for the next round of planned measurements. The tiny laboratory sat one vertical kilometer above the rover’s 2012 landing site.

NASA’s team is examining whether the feature qualifies as a transverse aeolian ridge, or TAR. Such ridges are shaped by wind, with their long axes oriented across the prevailing wind direction. Curiosity has examined potential TARs lower on Mount Sharp. Because Chocolatal sits higher, researchers want to learn whether its grains and layers resemble those earlier ridges or change with elevation.

Five thousand sols is longer than it sounds
NASA published the update on September 9, but the milestone came on Saturday, August 29. That day marked 5,000 sols since Curiosity’s August 2012 landing inside Gale Crater. NASA put that span at more than 5,137 Earth days; each Martian sol is slightly longer than an Earth day.
One kilometer describes height, not distance traveled
The one-kilometer figure describes elevation, not drive distance. NASA measured Curiosity 1,000 meters above its landing site on the floor of Gale Crater.
NASA’s mission page records the milestone on August 26, three days before sol 5,000. The rover reached that height by working its way up Mount Sharp, the layered mountain inside the crater.
A rover wheel opened the next tiny laboratory
During the week described in NASA’s update, Curiosity approached Chocolatal. ChemCam and Mastcam observations of the sand and nearby bedrock were included in the mission plan. A midweek drive then rolled one wheel into the ripple before the rover backed away.
That drive left a shallow trench. In the final planning cycle, which extended through sol 5,000, the team planned close-up MAHLI mosaics to look for layering and changes in grain size, APXS measurements of the coarse surface, and ChemCam observations at several points across the ripple.
Those instrument measurements were still plans when NASA’s account was written. The wheel track was complete. Curiosity’s next laboratory was a shallow trench in one ridge of sand.
